1 medium sized backpack with chest and belly front straps to secure the backpack in case of fall.
Long trousers to protect your skin from the sun, minor scratches and mosquito bites.
Polyester/lycra T-shirt, never use cotton when walking since it retains moist.
Walking boots.
Walking sticks: preferably two.
Thick mountain socks.
Cap or hat to protect your head from direct sun exposure.
Sun cream factor 50. Sun radiation in the Canaries should not be underestimated.
Fleece: although the weather in Gran Canaria is mild, you may find surprising low temperatures in the mountains. This is due to the effect of the alisios winds that carry along the moist from the sea. Please, never go out without a fleece on Gran Canaria!
Waterproof: although rare, some rain is possible, particularly on days 3 and 4.
You should take at least 2 liters of water per person, 3 liters would be better.
1 torch per person: if you get lost, a torch will be very helpful.
GPS device or your favourite smartphone GPS app to follow the tracks. All GPS tracks will be sent to you before arrival in .gpx file extension.
Always have a solid breakfast and make sure to eat some proteins (eggs, ham, cheese, etc.)
We would suggest you to get familiar with the walking directions and maps the night before your walk. This way, you will be ready for potential misreads and/or confusing directions on the path.
Start walking very slowly so you are never out of breath. Speed up after 20 min. from start if you feel confortable and try to keep a steady pace thrughout the duration of your walk. On the steep parts of the walks, go slow either up or downhill.
When you go uphill, take short steps.
When you go downhill, take longer steps and walk sideways and aided by your walking sticks.
Never overestimate the condition of the path. Keep your eyes open, particularly if there is gravel, loose rocks or pine needles covering the path!
We strongly recommend you to cancel your walk in case the temperature goes above 30 º Celsius or under heavy weather conditions such as rain, strong wind, etc. Heatstroke is a common ailment among walkers, amateur and experienced alike, and this may prove fatal in most cases!
Make sure you drink plenty of water every 20 min. According to the latest scientific research, in order to keep proper hydratation it is better to take long sips and fill up your stomach with liquid.
Take some snacks with you: sugary foods (bananas, fruit) in case of hypoglaecemia, salty foods (salted nuts) in case you may get a fainting spell.
Always take your mobile phone with you and make sure to have all useful numbers available, such as emergency numbers, Hotels, etc.
Always inform the reception personnel about your exact itinerary (show them maps and directions if necessary) and advise them on the aproximate return time for each walk.
