Island Adventure

ISLAND ADVENTURE

Island Adventure is our 1-week programme of voluntary work as you have never experienced before. During 7 days, a group of 45 fellow volunteers from different European countries will join forces in a nomadic journey across Gran Canaria while helping out vulnerable local communities with their own specific needs.

Set up a fence around a banana grove, clean up a wild beach, weed school grounds and remote forest areas, plant trees in a barren land, channel water for eco-agricultural communities, build a summer campsite for poor kids and many more. While helping out local communities you will have a chance to interact with each individual, thus learning from their own life stories in a life enriching process of cooperation and solidarity.

The volunteers will be coordinated by a team of experienced social workers, free-time and sports instructors who will guide the group across the island –by bus or by foot- and help with all accomodation, food and travel arrangements while encouraging the participants to reflect on their own attitudes towards community work.

Island Adventure is a social innovation program developed by the Department for Culture, Sport and Comprehensive Student Service of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University, the University Foundation of Las Palmas (FULP) and The Human Tour.

Justifications

Traveling is socially recognized as a means to open your mind, broaden horizons, increase human knowledge, clarify uncertainties and heal the soul. The term "journey" has strayed far from its original romantic conception andi t has become an impersonal and standardized practice.

On Island Adventure the trip is understood as an experience of change, by which the traveler, in close interaction with the environment and its inhabitants, is the protagonist. A personal and reflective experience that goes well beyond the traveled distance. To be faithful to this commitment we have devised an innovative process of collective planning and development of specific activities. "Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living " Miriam Beard.

The program philosophy is based on four main principles:

Educational

Island Adventure´s transformative learning process consists of confronting circumstances, projects and real problems. We trust in the potential of participants to direct changes by themselves, in the systems, policies, strategies or culture they may belong to. This experiential training focuses on the development of important human values and core competencies that are difficult to acquire in a classroom or through a textbook.

Institutional

The media potential and flexible forms of collaboration allow Island Adventure to be also a corporate social accountability program, versatile and innovative. In times of change, the ways of working are different. This is an initiative based on values, developed in collaboration with individuals and institutions and where relationships are tailored to the circumstances, interests and contributions of each of the parties.

Tourism

Island Adventure is presented as a program that regards Gran Canaria as a World class destination. Beyond conventional claims, Gran Canaria contains infinite travels within itself. Through the actions developed during the development of our programmes, we draw international attention on Gran Canaria with the intention to encourage our potential visitors come and visit the island, the territory and its peoples through responsible attitudes, informed and in harmony with an environment that has a lot to discover and preserve.

Social

The spread of ideas, initiatives and values are an integral part of the process. Participants interact and cooperate with the environment and its inhabitants, causing a positive impact. The experiences and philosophy are shared in person, on social networks and in various media channels.
